GIVING CODE: ACM1381
About the project
Each morning a group of dedicated Nazarenes rises to assist people living withHIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis in rural Swaziland. They are caring for the least of these in a country that has the highest HIV/AIDS prevalence rate in the world at 26 percent (UNAIDS). There are over 6,000 HIV-related deaths annually in the country.
The women and men who volunteer as caregivers with the Swaziland HIV/AIDS Taskforce provide direct care for the sick and dying in their home communities. They do this holistically, including medication and related education, training in life skills and income generation, teaching on marital faithfulness, grief counselling, and more. The Taskforce trains every volunteer caregiver and helps people living with HIV/AIDS to form support groups and create income generating projects.
The Taskforce was formed in 2002 out of necessity, as the HIV/AIDS pandemic spread throughout Swaziland. Mary Magagula, a registered nurse and board member of the Swaziland Nazarene Health Institutions, co-founded the Taskforce as she witnessed the devastating effects of this pandemic firsthand.
