Mumbai Anti-Trafficking Drop-in Center
About the project
Mumbai, India, is a big city with many red-light areas. Thousands and thousands of women and children are exploited through prostitution. Many vulnerable, impoverished children and women are trafficked from other areas of India; other women slip into this life out of the sheer need for survival. It’s here that the Church of the Nazarene has opened a drop-in center called Jivan Asha, or “hope of life.” And that hope is exactly what the church is trying to offer.
In the midst of darkness, the Jivan Asha drop-in center offers a safe place for women who are exploited and their children. The goal is to help women and children who are vulnerable to sexual abuse experience a dignified life.
The drop-in center offers children an alternative to hanging out in the streets. At Jivan Asha, they can come to experience safety and stability and gain educational support, nutrition, recreation, and spiritual nurturing. In addition, the center offers women opportunities to participate in self-help groups, vocational training for alternative ways to generate income, counseling, hygiene education, medical referrals, emotional support, and spiritual care.
The goal of the center is to help women and children experience true hope in their lives.
